So chances are if you are a webmaster or owner of a company with a strong online presence, you’ve heard about the Alexa toolbar and Alexa rankings.

So what are they?

The Alexa Rank

The Alexa rank of a website is a rank of how much traffic a certain website receives compared to every other website in the world. However, the data used in this calculation is gathered from website browsers that use the Alexa Toolbar. So a website may be ranked at  36000 which means that it receives more traffic than the site ranked at 36001  but less traffic than site 35999. However, there is a catch, more on this later.

Certain websites may have a high rank in a particular country, perhaps because they target this geographical location or are located there. They may even just get a lot of traffic from a particular region due to advertising or content.

The Alexa Toolbar

The Alexa toolbar is a tool which shows you the Alexa rank for a website. It can also show you the number of sites linking in to a particular website among other things.

Here is the ranking of  this website as of today:

The Catch

So what is the catch? Well, since the traffic that determines the Alexa rank comes from people which have the toolbar installed, it is not a complete metric. People may, in some circumstances, visit your website but not have the toolbar installed. Which means that there visit is not counted in the calculation of your websites rank. A site that is targeted at webmasters and SEO enthuasiasts is more likely to get ‘alexa-traffic’ than a site about ‘fishing’.

Where do I get the toolbar?

You can get the toolbar here: http://www.alexa.com/toolbar

Also while your on the website, would you mind giving this website a little review!

So how can I use this toolbar to compete with competitors?

First of all, you want to check the rankings of a competitors website and your website. Check a competitor that is better than you and one that is worse. Now check their statistics.

If you see that a competitor has a really low Alexa ranking while your ranking is high, that could mean you are not competing with this competitor at the same level at which you ought to be. If the competitor has a really high Alexa ranking, maybe in the millions, it could mean that the Alexa rank is not a true indication of the traffic of your competitor or that they have not utilised their website to get a better ranking.

In all scenarios, you generally want to increase your Alexa rank but more importantly you want to increase your online presence. Check the amount of incoming links a competitor with a high Alexa rank is getting. Next, go to those websites and consider advertising there or perhaps posting your link there. Be careful not to spam!

After some more research, you should be able to identify a few things about your competitor and how well they do against you online. At this point you can easily fix your mistakes and improve your own website which should result in more conversions, goals and traffic.

Best of luck!
