If you’re a webmaster or have been learning about the online world you would have probably heard the term SEO. So what is it?

Search Engine Optimization

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and as the name implies, it is all about optimization of one’s website to make it appear more ‘friendly’ to search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. But why would people want to make their websites friendlier to these search engines?

The answer is simple: rankings!

The more SEO work you do around your website, the better off your website will be. It will appear higher in search results which means more click throughs and ideally more sales of a product or more readers which may turn into regulars.

There are a few ways to increase your websites appeal (by means of SEO) to search engines. These are briefly listed below:

  • Analyse your pages – Use tools such as Google Analytics to analyse your traffic to find out what people are searching for when they come to your website. Its’ no use trying to rank for the word ‘brand new bikes’ when all your clients are actually searching for ‘cheap bikes’.
  • Write regular content – If you own a blog, make sure you write regular content, this is key for good rankings. If you own a business with static pages, ensure there are no spelling mistakes and all information is updated.
  • Use META tags – This is extremely important. META tags tell search engines what your website is all about. If you do not have them on your web pages, the search engine will have to make them up for you based on your content. This means you lose control on keywords you are trying to rank for. Read more about meta tags here.
  •  Title and ALT tags – Use these tags for all images and links on your website (if possible). A search engine robot can’t understand or process images, it needs text to know what your picture is about. Likewise with links, the search engine will not know the purpose of the link. Is your link useful for further reading? Is it an important link? What is it about specifically?

With more research and perhaps some investments, you will surely be able to rank for the keywords you desire using good old SEO (Search Engine….ah you get it now!).
