Before getting into a detailed study as to why we should eat carbohydrates, we should know what they
are. Carbohydrates are made up of sugars and fibers and are the most important source of energy in
our body. Carbohydrates are mainly composed in foods like pasta, rice, cereals and bread. For a healthy
body and mind, our meal should comprise of at least 40% carbohydrates, in the absence of which, our
body make look pale and weak. As far as weight loss in concerned, people avoid carbohydrates. But it
has been quite commonly seen that people who eat these fiber-rich foods stay fit throughout their life as
compared to those who avoid them. Carbohydrates are actually whole grains which comprise of three
parts- germ, bran and the starchy endosperm. Whole grains give you the feeling of being full due to which
you skip overeating and hence you arrive at your normal weight. Whole grain is mainly contained in foods
like oatmeal, rice and even popcorn and beans.

Oatmeal has been known to be quite a rich source of carbohydrates. A bowl full of oats taken as
breakfast makes you feel fuller for a long period of time and hence is also a contributor to the process of
weight loss. You can also add condiments like apple sauce, granola, brown sugar and honey to your bowl
of hot oatmeal to give it a great flavor, whichever suits your taste.

Another carbohydrate-rich veggie is the potato. Potatoes contain about 50 grams of carbohydrate each
and are also free from fats. Potatoes are a great source of vitamin C and potassium with fibers and a zero
amount of cholesterol. Potatoes shouldn’t be eaten with anything on them like cream or butter, as with
this addition they will turn to be full of calories. Baked potatoes are very good while fried ones are the
most harmful. So it would be better to restrict from frying them.

Next come pasta. Pasta in any form is a great source of energy. All forms of pasta are low in fat, except
for lasagne and manicotti which are filled in with loads of cheese. Both of these are to be avoided to
live a healthy lifestyle. In order to make pasta a healthier one rather than a fattening one, go for the use
of tomato ketchup, which is not only tangy but imparts great flavor when paired with pasta. But relying
completely on pasta for your intake of carbohydrates isn’t a good idea. Other carbohydrate-rich foods
should also be a part of your diet.

Beans, whether they are in any form are a great source of carbohydrates. Pinto beans, black beans,
kidney beans- all of them are a great source of energy and can be had in any form.

Lastly among the rich foods with carbohydrate content comes popcorn. Popcorn, which is air-popped, has
as low as 30 calories and oil-popped ones have a calorific value of 55. Popcorn is also a high fiber snack
and can easily be replaced by other fried and calorie-rich snacks.

These carbohydrates are such that you can include them into your diet without worrying about getting
overweight. Thus they should be religiously incorporated into your diet.
