Treadmill ownership is nothing new, but it is on the rise. A growing number of people are realizing that you don’t have to have a full gym in your house in order to get a reasonable workout.

And it’s not just homeowners that are being won over by treadmills. Earlier this year, the USA Today published an article about the rising popularity of treadmill desks, which have garnered a great deal of attention thanks to the negative findings associated with sitting in an office chair all day long. And that’s not all. The Associated Press says that there are currently some 3 million dog treadmills in the US alone. That’s right – treadmills made for dogs and marketed to their owners.

So what’s all the commotion about? The following are a few reasons that treadmills are so popular:

They save time
We’re a busy lot, and many of us are far more likely to exercise if it’s a quick and painless as possible. If you have a treadmill in the house, there’s no reason to head outside to the park, contend with traffic or commute to the gym. As difficult as it is to find time to exercise, it sure can be nice to knock out a significant chunk of your workout in the house.

They’re versatile
To be fair, you’re only walking or jogging, but modern treadmills have so many settings and controls that you customise your walk / run to get the exact workout you’re looking for. You can take some whey protein and increase the incline for more muscle training, or up the speed for greater intensity. You can firm; you can tone; you can do cardio. And all on a single machine.

They let you multitask
There are not many workout machines that allow you to do something fun and relaxing while you’re getting some exercise. In the gym, you can listen to music while you are exercising, but that’s about it. With a treadmill in your house, you can a workout while watching the television or even reading a book. Multitasking while you exercise is a beautiful thing. Allow yourself to get absorbed into another activity, and you can actually forget that you were working out in the first place. The time just flies by.

They allow you to exercise in spite of the weather
There are a few dedicated joggers and walkers out there, but if you are anything like most of us, you are all too willing to make an excuse to get out of exercise. Maybe you were planning on taking a walk before the rain started falling. Or, if you want out badly enough, you might even consider postponing a jog because it’s too hot or too sunny. With a treadmill in the house, you get a workout in the shady, climate-controlled comfort of your own home. No excuse; just exercise.

They’re convenient
This one really sums up all of the other points in a single topic. Even so, it’s worth separating out and mentioning on its own. The sheer convenience of having a treadmill at home makes exercising easier, more enjoyable and more accessible. You can squeeze a short run in around your schedule, or you can take a long and leisurely evening walk. Regardless, the workout happens in the comfort and safety of your own house – and that makes the entire experience so much more worthwhile.
