If you really want to get in shape and maintain a good level of fitness, it’s important to establish a regular routine and stick to it. It’s no good going for a run once every couple of weeks when you feel like it to burn off a few calories. Being consistent in your fitness efforts is the key to staying in shape. It can sometimes be difficult to stay motivated, especially if you find that your routine is repetitive and starting to get boring. Here are some tips to keep your motivation up and set you on the path to reaching the level of fitness that you desire.

Make a Playlist

Music can be a great motivational tool. Make a playlist of songs that motivate and inspire you and load it onto your iPod or MP3 player, ready for when you’re going for a run or a work-out in the gym. Having music to work out to not only blocks out any unwelcome distractions, but it can distract you in a good way and take your mind off of the fatigue that comes with pushing your body during exercise.

Create a Timetable and Set Goals

Having a timetable or schedule to work from will help you establish a regular routine. Plan out your week or month in advance and tell yourself what you are going to do. Think about what you want to work on and then write it down on a calendar or memo board somewhere where you can see it. If Monday is a good day for cardio, make it an official thing. If you want to work on your abs on Wednesday, write it down. Not only will this help with settling into a routine, but it’s a great way to set goals. Make a note of how many miles you want to run on Monday, and how many crunches you’re going to do on Wednesday. When you reach a goal, reward yourself in some way. Working hard toward a day off is great motivation!

Find a Work-out Buddy

Nothing motivates a person more than competition. Find a friend or colleague to join you during your work-out sessions and set targets for each other. Having somebody with you will not only motivate you to keep going, but it will push you just a little harder to reach and exceed your goals. Knowing that you’re helping somebody in the same position as you is also great motivation.

Join a Group

If one work-out buddy isn’t enough to keep you motivated, consider joining a group or class. If you’re a member of a group, you’re less likely to skip out on work-out sessions and more likely to be motivated by the people around you. If you join a class, the mentor will be sure to push you to your limits and drill the motivation to succeed and keep fit into you.

Think Positively

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to think positive thoughts. Erase negativity by focusing on the end result and what you want to achieve. If you don’t reach a goal or you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up over it. Channel all negative energy into positive and focus on how you’re going to make up for the day you missed and get back on the path to reaching your goals.

It’s difficult to maintain a mental state of fitness motivation at times, especially if part of you would rather go out drinking with your friends than spend an hour or two at the gym. Remember that a good level of fitness makes for a healthy body and mind. Make use of the tips above and you’ll find that keeping your motivation and drive to stay fit and healthy isn’t as difficult as it may seem.
