Is research really important? Can’t I just write about Car Insurance and earn some money right now! No, you can’t.

Research is crucial and one of the most important, if not the most important part of the writing article procedure.

The tools we will be using to research our topic are:

  • Google Adwords Keyword Tool
  • Other Articles on Major Article Publishing Networks
  • Hot Trends and Popular News

Google Adwords Keyword Tool

The Google Adwords Keyword Tool is our most important researching tool. We will be referring to it as the Keyword Tool.

Let’s go back to our demonstration article. We want to write an article on a topic we are familiar with. I myself am a programmer and enjoy games. I could write about either of that topic but perhaps they will not pay as much as I want them to. We have to experiment on different keyword phrases that will earn the most revenue.


Let’s write about: Farmville Games

Why, You ask?


Well Farmville has millions of players that play it monthly. It is already promoted like crazy so you don’t need to promote the article as much. So what is a common search someone who plays Farmville might type?

We can type these ideas into a notepad file:

  • Play Farmville
  • Farmville Tips
  • Farmville Hacks
  • Farmville Tricks
  • Farmville Secrets
  • Farmville


So which one can we choose? Let’s use the Keyword tool to help us! Enter all of the above keywords into the Keyword tool.

First of all on the left hand side of the tool tick the [Exact] checkbox. Results should update shortly. We want exact results as broad results may include a variety of results.

For example the keyword Farmville may also rank for Farmville Tips which means the keyword is broad and a variety of keywords and keyword combinations may rank for the same keyword. The [Exact] keyword is surrounded by brackets and searched for the exact phrase or keyword. This is much more valuable as it tells us how many people search Google for that specific phrase you want your article to rank for.

So let’s search for our keywords again with the [Exact] filter turned on.

In the first section we enter all of our keyword phrases. One phrase or keyword per line.

Next expand the Advanced Options and Filters tab because we are going to need to learn about Geo-Targeting. It is important to know who our target audience is. When talking about the game Farmville you are going to expect our article to be written in a way younger children can understand. Even though some adults play Farmville you can be sure that the majority of players are going to be younger. So where do you target our Keyword? I have selected the United States but I want to target the article at the entire world. So why have I targeted the US?


The answer is simple.


Google AdSense pays people per ad click based on their location and many other factors. The CPC (cost per click) also determines how much one is paid. If my blog is about US Car Insurance and someone from England clicks on an US Advertisement on my blog with a CPC of $50.00, I may only get 10 cents. Yes, that’s not a typo.

This is because an England visitor is not very useful to a US company selling US based car insurance. If a United States visitor was to click on the advertisement then our payout would be much, much higher.

Google AdSense pays you much more for first world countries visitor’s clicks compared to other countries. The United States pays the most by far (unless if our website is geo-targeting another country). It is always best to set the US as the location in the keyword tool. The language should also be English unless you are targeted users that read a specific country.


The Search Results

Keyword Search Results

Before we can analyze the above search results we must first look at each column and understand what they mean.


Keyword – This shows us the keyword we are searching for.

Competition – Number of websites trying to rank for the same keyword. [Low, Medium or High]

Global Monthly Searches – Monthly global searches for [Exact] result.

Local Monthly Searches – Month local (country selected) searches for [Exact] results. Approximate CPC – Average Cost Per Click you can expect to earn.


Analyzing our results we can see instantly that Farmville Tricks is the highest paying CPC. It is not that high but $2 per click is a very good rate. We see that it also has a low amount of monthly searches (a factor as to why the CPC is so high). We also see Farmville has around 368 000 local searches and 1 500 000 global searches each month. While this may be high the CPC is only 45 cents and it is unlikely that you will rank for this keyword even though the competition is reported as low.

Looking at the results Farmville Tips and Farmville tricks seem to be two good keywords that would both have a decent CPC and a good amount of monthly searches.

So let’s combine the two and search for : Farmville Tips and Tricks

As we are searching for only one term now let’s also look at the broad search results:

From the above results I can see that the average CPC is around $1 for my keyword. I can also expect to get around 700-ish local or 1500-ish global visits if I was in search position #1 for this phrase.

I am happy with this and will choose this as my topic.

    Here’s a tip I’m using for my local biz its called day-parting. We saved a lot of money but scheduling our ads to appear during only business hours of the day. I guess theres a report (under the dimensions tab if I remember correctly) that allows you to analyze CPC and cost per conversion by hour of the day so you can just advertise during peak hours. We actually started a process of increasing our bids during those peak hours to push out our competitors during that time and we ended up reducing overall costs by doing this as well since its more targeted.
