As a new freshmen in college, long nights, studying and plenty of homework can keep you from having a traditional schedule. Over time, eating on the go and not having enough time to exercise can lead to what is commonly referred to as the “freshmen fifteen”, or when newcomers to college tend to gain weight from junk food, eating out, drinking and fluctuating sleep schedules. If you are about to enter college yourself but you want to avoid any weight gain at all, it is possible by understanding more about nutrition, your body and its needs. Avoiding the freshmen fifteen can be easily achieved with a commitment to one’s overall health, regardless of circumstances and surroundings.

 

Eating and Snacking Regularly

According to WebMD, eating and snacking regularly can help to keep overeating at a minimum. Eating every three to four hours is recommended to ensure the body is satisfied for extended periods of time to keep from eating too much.

 

Choose to Walk

If you are living on campus at college, choose to walk to the nearest diner or grocery store for any of your needs. Walking will help you to keep your body active even during those long nights and weeks when you have no time to incorporate exercise into your routine. By walking, you will also burn additional calories to keep you from gaining weight by being too sedentary. Incorporate other forms of both cardio exercise and strength training as much as possible to keep your body in its peak condition.

 

Choosing Healthier Alternatives

Choosing healthier alternatives when it comes to both beverages and foods can help to drastically cut down on caloric intake you have on a day to day basis. Choose “zero” or low-calorie beverages and always check for alternatives, even with mixed coffees and lattes. “Skinny” lattes and mixed drinks often contain less calories altogether.

 

Instead of choosing a bag of cookies or crackers for a snack, make a homemade alternative using real chocolate, yogurt, or even whipped cream. Spending time in your dorm preparing homemade snacks can save money while also allowing you to gain insight into the type of food you are putting into your body each day.

 

Prepare Your Meals Ahead of Time

One night of the week, prepare meals you plan to eat for the upcoming week while you are studying. Preparing your meals ahead of time from your dorm room is a way to keep positive eating habits in motion regardless of how much time you will need to dedicate to classes and studying in the upcoming week. Packing lunches, snacks and even desserts can keep you from eating out or eating junk food when it is completely unnecessary.

 

Removing Trigger Foods

Some foods can cause triggers to binge and eat even when you are not hungry or entirely satiated from the meal you have recently finished. Removing as much sugar as possible from your diet can help to increase energy levels while allowing you to feel more full for extended periods of time. Cut out processed foods and junk foods and instead, choose to shop for vegetables, fruits, fresh meats, cheeses and spices to create real meals at the fraction of the cost.

 

Keeping the weight off during your freshmen year in college is possible with just a little effort to understand more about what you are eating and how it will impact the overall health of your body. By staying healthy and active, you can maintain and potentially lose weight regardless of what year of college you are in.
